Crusenstolpe wrote an answer to this critique, which was never published, but Zetterstéen was, apparently on the basis of that answer, of the opinion that Crusenstolpe had a thorough knowledge of the Arabic language (Toll, `The Translation of the Koran', p. 210). 41 Krëuger, Sveriges, pp. 206­20. 42 See the notice in Den Norske Rigstidende, 5 May 1841. 2004-06-30 His popularity decreased for a time in the 1830s, culminating in the Rabulist riots after the Lèse-majesté conviction of the journalist Magnus Jacob Crusenstolpe, and some calls for his abdication. Charles John survived the abdication controversy and he went on to have his silver jubilee , which was celebrated with great enthusiasm on 18 February 1843.

In modern Norwegian lists of kings he is called Charles III John. He was the first monarch of the Bernadotte dynasty. Born in Pau Jacob Crusenstolpe, a novelist and writer of note, was one of the intimate friends and supporters of the government, but turned liberal, attacking the king in a pamphlet. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, which created great commotion and a revolt in Stockholm, not subdued except after a bloody conflict with the troops (July, 1838).
